Why a K-ETA can take longer than 72 hours
Assessment normally takes up to 72 hours, but some files are reviewed in more detail — for example when the information entered needs to be cross-checked. There is no official way to speed up a pending application, which is why we recommend applying as soon as your trip is booked.
Why applications are refused
The Korean authorities do not explain individual decisions: the assessment criteria are classified. The official grounds for refusal or cancellation are:
- not meeting the assessment criteria set by Korea’s immigration rules;
- false information, or omitting significant information;
- incorrect personal information.
In practice, refusals are often linked to data that does not match the passport, a non-compliant photo, a previous overstay or immigration violation, or answers to the health and criminal-record questions.
If you made a mistake in your application
If the problem was an error in your details — a wrong passport number, a misspelled name or a wrong date — the solution is to apply again with the correct information. Providing false information, on the other hand, can lead to refusal and to entry restrictions, so always answer truthfully.
Get it right the first time
Our team reviews every application for typos and inconsistencies before it is submitted to the Korean authorities.
Apply with a human checkAfter a refusal: applying for a visa
A refused K-ETA does not necessarily mean you cannot visit Korea. To travel, you need to apply for a visa at a Korean embassy or consulate — for short visits, usually a short-term visit visa (C-3). Prepare your passport, photo, the application form and documents supporting the purpose of your trip, and allow time for processing. See Korean visa types explained for an overview.
Tip: do not buy non-refundable tickets before you hold an approved K-ETA or visa.
How to reduce the risk of refusal
- Copy your details from the passport’s machine-readable lines, character by character.
- Use a recent, sharp, front-facing photo.
- Use the same passport for the application and for travel.
- Give a real address and contact number in Korea.
- Answer every declaration honestly.
- Have someone else check your answers before you submit.
At the airport without an approved K-ETA
Airlines check K-ETA status before boarding. If you need a K-ETA and do not have an approved one, you can be refused boarding — and the K-ETA cannot be obtained on arrival. Check your status before leaving for the airport.
